Abstract: This interactive session will focus on an exciting new Perkins-funded statewide professional development recourse for Career & Technical educators. The Network, a unique partnership between Austin Community College, four regional colleges, existing professional development consortia, and the Texas Community College Teachers Association, provides a one-site source for online CTE training modules, webinars, a portfolio system to store activity completion, and much more.

Bio: Ms. Mouchayleh is the Director of Professional Development & Evaluation at Austin Community College and is the Project Director for the Texas Network for Teaching Excellence in Career & Technical Education. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Oklahoma State University and her master’s degree, also in English, from the University of Central Oklahoma. She is currently ABD in higher education administration at the University of Texas at Austin. Ms. Mouchayleh taught English at Amarillo College from 1981 to 1999 and came to Austin Community College in 1999. Currently President of TCCTA, she also serves on the Advisory Committee of the Texas Collaborative for Teaching Excellence.

Bio: Richard Moore joined the staff of the Texas Community College Teachers Association in 1991, serving as Executive Director for the past seven years. In that time, he has helped position the organization as a leader in professional and leadership development for community colleges, as well as provide a crucial voice for two-year colleges before the Texas Legislature. Richard has spearheaded strategic alliances with state agencies, associations, vendors, and college leaders to engage faculty in the issues that will shape the profession’s future. Richard studied philosophy and economics at the University of Texas at Austin, and theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to express the philosophical positions of Epicureanism as it applies to anti-materialism. Scientific and Psychological studies will be presented to bolster the findings of Epicurus. In short, I will give scientific and philosophical reasons as to why Materialism isn’t making American’s or any other humans happy.

"The Collaboration of an Honors Learning Community Series."

Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to give an insight into a multi-disciplinary, multi-semester, ongoing Honors Learning Community Series that has an supplemental on-line presence. Four presenters will give the visions, planning, development, pitfalls, and successes that have occurred throughout this process as well as project out to potential pitfalls that may occur with implementation and how others can learn from our triumphs and mistakes.

Bio: Jamili Omar is an Associate Professor of English and Honors Program Director at Lone Star College-CyFair. She can frequently be found teaching Composition and Rhetoric I and II and has a fondness for teaching Honors sections of these same courses.

Bio: Valerie Peyer is an Associate Professor of English at Lone Star College-CyFair. She teaches Composition and Rhetoric I & II, American Literature II, and Mexican American Literature, her area of emphasis. Before joining the LSC – CyFair faculty, Valerie was an English Instructor at Northwest Vista College in San Antonio, TX.

Bio: Maria Sanders is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Lone Star College-CyFair. She has 18 years college teaching experience, as well as administrative and legal experience. Maria is a licensed attorney and is currently completing her dissertation for a Ph.D. in Philosophy. Maria previously served as the Director of Academic Affairs for South Texas College where one of her duties was to provide leadership over their Learning Communities Program.

"Achieving Accessibility Compliance in an Online Learning Environment."

Abstract: Accessibility in online learning is required, but often is an element of online teaching that is ignored. Many feel the percentage of students with disabilities is small and complying with the law may be too difficult. This session is intended to speak briefly to the online compliance requirements and touch on how they can be accomplished – not as daunting as some think. Online learning is no longer a trend but is an integral part of many students’ higher education and well designed courses complying with section 508 is good design for all students.
